After returning from beyond the Rim, Anna Windrider and the crew of the Evangeline investigate the events that lead to their unfortunate circumstances. Anna visits her old mentor, Colonel Wright, looking for advice and any leads on the mysterious cult. Meanwhile, Armin and Jen seek out information from a questionable source. The answers they get force them to team up with one of the most notorious scoundrels in the Empire and go on a rescue mission for a missing professor.

Not only will Anna be forced to confront old wounds, but she will embark on a mission that will affect every man, woman, and child in the Empire.
